Lessons from French Architecture

As a French interior designer living and working in New York, my summer 2023 exploration of Bordeaux, Arcachon, Paris, and Deauville has been a captivating odyssey into the realm of enduring architecture and exquisite interior design. Amidst the cultural tapestry and architectural wonders of these cities, I have come to gather invaluable insights that go beyond trends and underscore the significance of time and quality in my creative pursuits.

In Bordeaux (Southwest France), a city steeped in architectural heritage, I discovered the art of timeless construction. The meticulous attention to detail, adherence to structural integrity, and use of lasting materials in historic buildings served as a reminder that enduring designs require time-honored craftsmanship. Each element, from the ornate facades to the precisely crafted interiors, showcased the unwavering commitment to excellence, a hallmark of Bordeaux's architectural legacy.

Arcachon (Atlantic Coast of France), a coastal gem, gave me an appreciation for designs that embrace their surroundings. The harmonious coexistence of villas with nature taught me that well-crafted architecture should adapt and evolve alongside its environment. Crafting spaces that connect with the outdoors in a sustainable and sensitive manner ensures a lasting impact that endures against the changing tides of time.

Paris, the epitome of artistic grandeur, revealed the captivating power of breathtaking interior design in its charming restaurants and clubs. The spaces exuded elegance, sophistication, and a seamless blend of history and contemporary sensibilities, leaving an enduring impression of artistry and allure. Precise engineering, rigorous planning, and unwavering quality have immortalized these venues as timeless marvels, evoking emotions and cultural pride in all who encounter them.

In Deauville (Normandy, Northwest France), the transformation of a former convent into the captivating museum Les Franscaines unveiled the art of adaptive reuse. The seamless fusion of history with contemporary design epitomizes the essence of timelessness. The restoration process underscored the importance of preserving heritage while embracing innovative approaches, ensuring that the space remains relevant and cherished for generations to come.

As I incorporate these profound lessons into my work in the US, I am driven by the pursuit of architectural longevity and enduring interior design. Emphasizing time and quality has become a guiding principle in every project. By carefully selecting materials, enlisting skilled craftsmen, and embracing sustainability, I endeavor to create spaces that will endure the tests of time, transcending passing trends to become timeless reflections of refined artistry.
