The Art of the Entrance: Designing Foyers That Leave a Lasting Impression
As an interior designer, I’ve always believed that the foyer is the soul of a home. It’s not just a transition space—it’s an introduction, a prologue that sets the tone for everything else. Designing a foyer is about creating a sense of arrival that embodies the homeowner’s identity and leaves a lasting impression on every guest.
Let me take you inside my world as I explore the elements that transform an entryway into a masterpiece, including a glimpse into how I approached one of my favorite foyer transformations.
Designing for Impact: Where It All Begins
The foyer is your opportunity to make a bold statement. When I start designing a home, I often ask clients: What do you want people to feel the moment they walk in? Is it awe, tranquility, or excitement?
Every design decision flows from this question. For one client, whose Manhattan townhouse had a double-height entryway, the answer was clear: they wanted sophistication and warmth. This vision guided every choice, from the light fixture to the art placement.
Statement Lighting: Setting the Mood
Lighting is often where I start. It’s more than just illumination—it’s the jewel of the foyer. For the Manhattan townhouse project, I selected a custom brass chandelier with cascading glass pendants. The light’s soft glow complemented the natural stone flooring, adding a sense of understated luxury.
Layering light is another essential technique. Wall sconces flanking a mirror or artwork add depth, while a subtle recessed fixture can highlight the intricate details of a custom ceiling design.
Custom Flooring: A Foundation of Elegance
Flooring plays a pivotal role in anchoring the space. For that same Manhattan project, I collaborated with an artisan to design a black-and-white marble floor in a striking geometric pattern. It was bold yet timeless, drawing attention to the expansive entryway while setting the stage for the rest of the home.
When working with clients, I guide them to choose materials that balance beauty with durability. A foyer should make an impression without compromising on practicality.
Curating Bespoke Details: Where the Magic Happens
This is where the foyer comes alive. I like to think of every detail as a character in the story. In the same project, a custom console table crafted from walnut and antique brass became a focal point. Above it, a large abstract painting by an emerging artist added personality, while a sleek alabaster bowl offered a functional yet stylish touch.
Mirrors are another secret weapon. They create depth and reflect light, making the space feel expansive, even in compact foyers.

For me, good design starts with the architecture. Details like archways, coffered ceilings, or textured walls aren’t just structural—they set the tone for the entire space.
